Island Peak (locally known as Imja Tse) stands at 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) and is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal, within the boundaries of Sagarmatha National Park. The peak earned its English name from Eric Shipton in 1953, who thought it resembled an "island" in a sea of ice. Island Peak is one of the most climbed trekking peaks in Nepal, often chosen as a pre-Everest training climb or a first Himalayan summit due to its accessibility and moderate technical challenges.
The expedition begins with a scenic flight to Lukla, followed by a trek through legendary Sherpa villages such as Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche. Most itineraries include a visit to Everest Base Camp (EBC) or Kala Patthar before turning toward Island Peak for acclimatization. The actual summit push involves glacier travel, use of ropes, and a final headwall ascent to the summit ridge. The views from the top are spectacular, featuring Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Ama Dablam, and the towering face of Everest.
Island Peak is ideal for climbers who are physically fit, have some trekking or hiking experience, and are looking to gain basic alpine mountaineering skills. While not highly technical, the climb does involve the use of crampons, harness, fixed ropes, ascenders, and ice axe, making it a true mountaineering adventure.
Weather can cause flight delays in/out of Lukla—keep buffer days
You must have travel insurance that covers high-altitude climbing and rescue
Hydration and gradual ascent are key to avoiding altitude sickness
All gear can be rented in Kathmandu or Namche if needed
Summit day starts at around 2 AM and can take 10–12 hours round trip
